Blog 9: Wild Card
As you work on developing your portfolio, you should think about other writing styles you may want to include from different genres. Write about what you would include that we didn't cover in this class or you can write about what journals or in-class writings you are selecting to fold into your portfolio.

ReplyDeleteWhile I did learn plenty of new things this year in class, I didn’t get to cover everything that I wanted to. I would have loved to have done a different topic for my crots. Or gotten the chance to do another song for comp 2 (even though my comp 2 turned out really well). But mainly, I would have loved to have gotten to play around with some of the other possible genre topics for comp 3. I would have loved to include a eulogy. I think that a eulogy would have been very fun and interesting to write. There is so much freedom in it. I can write about whatever I want pretty much because it is all about me and what I haven’t done yet. It allows room for the unknown. There are plenty of things that I want to do with my life and getting the chance to do them would be amazing. To be able to live them out and be living life to the fullest is what would be awesome. Then not only doing that, see what someone has to say about me once I have died. There would be certain things that I would want to write about and things I wouldn’t want to write about. It’d be interesting to see what someone else thought was important enough to write about and see what they included in my life’s accomplishments. Overall though, we covered all of the topics that I wanted to cover and am very happy with all of the progress that I have made and I can’t wait to continue growing in the future.
My whole semester’s theme has taken a role in technology. My Composition 1 looks at the different ways I read text including: animals, books, peoples, cell phones, and computers. I remember Composition 1 was all directed towards learning how to “explode the moment”. The first in class journal experience that we practiced this technique was “Peter and the Chicken” video. We first wrote one sentence to explain the fight, then we wrote about three sentences to more detailed describe the battle. Lastly, I wrote a whole paragraph describing as deeply detailed as possible what I saw through my eyes. I found this lesson to be very helpful in exploding the moment practice for writing Crots so I decided to use this exercise as my intro to my first Composition. My second composition relates to the music video “California Gurls” by Katy Perry, and this alone is a use of technology. I analyzed the symbols and meanings throughout this video and within my portfolio I made each draft like it was a stage of filming using; writing the lyrics, filming the video, making it a production! The whole idea of Composition 2 was to find the symbolism and meaning in a video writing about what one views on mute and from different perspectives. Before Composition 2 we did a blog on choosing a picture and analyzing the symbolism from different audiences perspectives. I chose a gun as my picture, which I believe, has multiple different meanings and uses depending on the person. Whether you’re a police officer, hunter, or trying to keep your family safe you may appreciate and associate positive meaning with a gun. Individuals that are a victim have lost a child, feel safe, live in a bad neighborhood where gun crime is prevalent one may associate negative feelings with gun possession. I used this blog for the introduction to my Composition 2. I am still working on my Composition 3 and using facebook, video, and newspaper as visual guidance to my thoughts and ideas.

ReplyDeleteI never thought about writing a eulogy. That would be really interesting though probably not realistic to see what people really would write about you when you die. People would not want to jeopardize your thoughts nor be in the mindset or sadness that you really are dead. But I also wonder what speeches commemorating me my friends and families will give at my funeral. I would have liked to watch a movie that I watched when I was younger and now watching it six years later I have a whole new meaning to the characters, the maturity and the older people jokes,I always find it fascinating the huge differences I see in movies like the Parent Trap from when I was six to now I am eighteen years old.
In the beginning of this class I was really worried about writing about reading because I guess you can say I am quite far from World's biggest book worm. I only thought about the technical sense of the word read...as in books. But, my project is turning out pretty well I believe. I think I will be proud of it at the end.
Some styles of writing that will be included in my Portfolio that we did not really discuss in class can be found on the page for my second composition. There you will see an advertisement and a newspaper article. When I was writing the newspaper article I found myself having to research how to write one and even how they look. I didn’t realize I knew so little about them since I do not tend to read the newspaper. But when it came to doing it for this project I had to make the smallest details right even coming down to the font choice. Also for my second composition I made an advertisement/flyer for an organization I created. Not only did I have to look up how to set up a flyer but I had to research other organizations similar to mine to make it sound believable.
ReplyDeleteAlso a different writing style I will have to use for my portfolio is, the portfolio itself. I have never made a website before so I had to figure out a way to make this project seem like it should be intended for a variety of different audiences. I have never had to write a homepage of a website before so I’m struggling with what to write there but somehow still make it relevant to the portfolio.

ReplyDeleteA lot of the things that you said was stuff that I was thinking about when we were working and when I also went back to do my reflection. When we did watch Peter and the Chicken, that was the moment that I finally understood what exploding the moment meant. Your example of the gun is accurate, depending on your perspective, a gun can elicit and positive or negative thought. For your comp. 3 I never even thought about using facebook as a possible genre. Itll be really interesting to see how that turns out.

ReplyDeleteI know what you are going through about having to write something when you have no idea how to write in that format or style I did a newspaper article, a script and a website bio and I had no idea how to write any of those. After I learned what to do though, it all became a lot easier. I think it’s pretty cool that you made a flyer for your comp 2. I never would have thought to do that.

ReplyDeleteI enjoyed this class and all the new writing styles that I have learned about as the year went by. Writing in crots was probably the hardest thing to do for me because I am the least creative person that I know but it helped me as a reader and a writer when I finally figured out what I was doing and to add onto details without losing important information. I also liked how we learned to write in three different genres but I was hoping to add to my third composition so more by adding more genres like a website and a music video. I am not sure if it would make my point any stronger and I wouldn’t know how to add context to these things. With my third composition my genres were the best that I could think of because of the strengths that I have when relating to previous English papers. I would have included writing about an autobiography or something to that effect. I am very good at this but others in the class may not be. I would have liked this because we would have introduced things that would have made my writing better for the third composition and for anyone else that wrote in a memoir as well. I would also have included something on how to write out a website or a music video. In composition two I had a hard time coming up with ideas and details that the video had to offer. I had to rely on a previous lesson about how people interpret spaces differently than others to help me pull more detail out of the music video that I watched. But even then I still had a hard to time trying to get the 5-page limit that Ms. Mitchell required. But all in all I thought that I learned a great deal in this class

ReplyDeleteI wouldn't say that the eulogy topic was that fun but it was something that i learned a lot about myself and how i would want people to remember me by and what things that I wouldn't want to be said. But if you think about why would it matter its not like you’re around to hear it. I would never want me family to say eulogy for me anytime soon the thought of it hits home if you know what I mean. I have lost a lot of family members the last couple years I don't want to hear another eulogy from anyone else from my family about another family member
What would have been interesting to me is if we had gone into detail of "reading" people like what we mentioned at the beginning of class. To me that would have been interesting because it have been very exciting to see how everyone interperts the way people act when around others and such. i find this topic very appealing because i could normally read my friends well enough that they would normally start to tell me that i was too good at it when i would find things out that they did not want anyone else to know. but the real interesting part would be describing how i know it down on paper because as of now i still only do it reflectively and normally only when a friend is not very happy. Also i would have loved to talk a little more about music mainly because i play an instrument and its important to my life. i would have just like to hear how everyone else interprets music around them and how it can change from one person to another.

I also think it would be very fun to go back to the compositions we did at the beginning of the year like crots. Now that i understand how a crot is supposed to be formatted and what it is supposed to be like i think i would have more fun writing on topics like that because being random and spontaneous is something that i think is fun to do.

ReplyDeleteAlthough we covered many styles of writing in class this semester, time restrictions placed a damper on covering any more. Given the opportunity, I would like to have included a letter in my portfolio. The letter, directed to myself, would be written for the purpose of being looked back upon years from now. In other words, the letter is meant to be a recollection of memories from that specific point in time—specifically, my first semester of college. I think this would be a really fun project to work on. It is unlike any other assignment I have completed thus far. Additionally, I would also have liked to been able to incorporate a short story into my portfolio. As a college student, the majority of assignments revolve less around creativity and more on the mastery of material. I haven’t written a short story in a long time, so it would be nice to experience the originality and imagination involved in constructing one once again. Out of choice, I decided to include a newspaper article, advertisement, and website as part of my portfolio. For the newspaper article, I used a template to authentically replicate the design and font of a real newspaper. I also researched my hometown’s paper for statistics to provide on the template. As for the advertisement, I spent a lot of time organizing and planning the layout, in addition to searching for content that suited its purpose. The advertisement was a representation of the organization that I founded in composition three. Last but not least, I stepped out of my familiarity zone to include a website as a part of my portfolio. The website, serving as a gallery of my artwork, also includes a biography. This provided the viewer with bits and pieces of information about myself so they could get to know me better as a person.

ReplyDeleteI think technology was a great choice for the overall theme of your work for the semester. Our society revolves a great deal around technology, so it is interesting to see you incorporate it into the assignments. I read through your second composition to add comments and suggestions, and I think you did a really great job. I love how you interpreted the video, connecting it to the world today. For your third composition, it was really clever to include Facebook. It is such a popular sight that connects so many different people from around the world.
I have included a few in-class writings in my portfolio in order to display a few different styles outside of my compositions. The first in-class writing is the “Exploding the Moment” assignment. In this assignment, I expounded on the (purposefully) mundane story given to the class. This was probably my favorite free write as it allowed me to have fun and be extremely creative, such as revising “Some jerk cut me off and I almost had a wreck” to “By now I know not to let my foot stray from the brake pedal for long—the driving qualifications of some people in this city are questionable”.
ReplyDeleteMy second free-write I've included is the assignment entitled “Space and Voice: Exploring a Space”. This is the assignment that had the class go out about campus and take notes of their surroundings. I was unfortunately absent that day, but was still able to explore the classroom space instead. While this wasn't quite as exciting as writing about the student union or Landis green, I found the challenge enjoyable. This free-write exhibits my analytical and communication skills.
Free-write number three is the assignment, “Technology and Your World View”. This is the one based on the On Writing article and also the internet news article about Google and the “Google generation”. Here I summarized the way in which technology affects me on a daily basis, and I also argued that my generation's reliance on technology might not be as bad as it seems, considering most generations have a flaw that's later seen as acceptable or at least not detrimental.

ReplyDeleteGood idea on the letter. I think such an introspective assignment would have been challenging and rewarding. I agree on the short story. I haven't had much narrative story writing experience, even in high school. The advertisement idea is very creative, and I wish I would have thought of a similarly visual genre, instead of making three fairly “text heavy” ones.
ReplyDeleteThis semester I would have loved to cover so much more, but with the lack of amount of time, we were unable to. If we had more time in the class I would have liked to write more in a creative style such as crots or even poems. I have found that creative writing is so much easier to write because I have a “unique” personality. When I find passion in a subject writing about that subject just flows out and there’s less writers blocks. I would have loved to write a crot about my family. At the beginning of the semester I never realized how fast these past couple of weeks would go until now. I have learned so much in this English class, but I also wish I had learned more about different styles of writing besides just creative and essays. I used the journals in my portfolio because I believe that those events helped me grow as a person. Moving to Tallahassee, getting into FSU, and even taking this class has helped me learn who I am and who my true friends are. As a whole these past couple of months have been a great experience.

ReplyDeleteI think a letter would be a great way to show how you've grown because it has shown your perspective of your first semester of college. Also you showed me your ad, newspaper article, and website and I think those three was really great idea and you can tell how much work you put into each genre.
