Blog 10: Design

Design is in the way you represent yourself. How do you plan to design your portfolio? Discuss the particular font styles, colors, images you plan to use and how they function as rhetoric.

Im going to have a pretty simple font style. It is going to blend in with the layout that I’m going to chose. Ill have tabs at the top of the page so it is easy to navigate too all of the other pages within the portfolio. Ill have a tab for each composition, my blogs, my reflections, and my table of contents. Each tab will be designed so that there will be a summary of each thing that I have posted and then the link or attached file right below it so it is easy to know which summary goes with each file. It also looks better that way and is more organized. I am going with the theme of growth and development so that I can show how I have grown and developed over the course of the semester. Itll show my progress and how I view myself within the classroom setting and also in the grand scheme of everyone else. Everything in my portfolio is going to contribute to my theme of growth. All of the pictures, titles of the tabs, and language reflect how I have grown. All of the elements in my portfolio will go toward building the rhetoric. All of them act toward one common goal and that is too build everything up to be the best it can be. I hope that it will help spread my message of how this class and my classmates have helped me to learn new things and to grow.

  2. My design for my portfolio is going to be relatively simple and organized. I think this accurately describes who I am as a person and since this portfolio is supposed to represent us I thought it was fitting. I found the perfect layout, that is sunflowers, and I love this design because when I was younger my grandmother used to call me sunshine and gave me a sunflower necklace. My grandmother was the one who taught me how to read so I found that it was perfect to honor her in the way that she has inspired me to make the layout represent me and my growth as a writer and reader. I’m keeping my fonts as the preset gray and making the font a little bigger then what the standard was, only because it makes it easier to read. Each tab is self-explanatory with a title describing what it is and a short summary below each link I provided. I am not very technically savvy so I kept everything as basic as possible so others like me could manage it. Rhetoric is defined as the ability to use language effectively, and I think that all of the elements I use in my portfolio contribute to laying out the way I became who I am today and what I am like.

I think it is pretty cool that you were able to relate it back to your grandmother and tie it in with your childhood. It’s always pretty cool when you can relate a project to something personal because then it gives the project or report meaning and makes u want to put more effort in to it. My portfolio is pretty similar. I have the titles and on each page there is a summary of each thing. Then I added pictures to help illustrate my theme, which is growth.

I plan to design my portfolio as me as a writer growing from your average just out of high school writer to being a college writer. At the beginning I wrote poetic inquires that explained what the picture meant on that page and how it related to me as a person but also as a writer. I then set up green font to jump out of the darker background and makes it very easy to read. If you knew me through my last 13 years of school then you would be very surprised at how much effort I am putting into my portfolio but also how neat and creative this portfolio is. I am the least creative person that I know and for good reason if you all would see my hand writing then you would understand why I never put a lot of thought into an English class because no matter how great the paper I turn in it will always be marked off for either neatness or spelling. My background picture I put the picture of a cross on top of a mountain with the sun just hitting it as if it were the early dawn. I chose this because I am a religious person and I believe that I wouldn't be here if it weren't for gods help by that is just because of my early years when I was a little kid I was diagnosed with autism and have struggled through many obstacle to just to prove that I wasn't autistic and that I can be considered a normal person through sheer will power. And that is what I did I worked my butt off in all of my classes when I was in elementary school and soon found out that school wasn’t that hard and found from middle school on I had little to no problem with class and everyone thought that it was a normal kid with out knowing my true past.

That is the same way that I did mine for the most part. Except I added pictures that reflect who I am as a reader and writer but also who I am as a person. My font color jumps out at you when you read my portfolio I have a green font style when in the middle of the portfolio with a dark blue background and the picture of the cross on the mountain as my theme. But a white font color when you move higher up in the portfolio when I am writing the poetic inquires that I have. But other than that i has the same things as you I have the same tabs except I added a final draft tab that includes all of my compositions final drafts.

I used to be the same way as you. I never really put all of my effort into English class. I did all of the work, but I was basically just going through the motions. In high school, that was ok because I was getting A’s, but in college, that just won’t it. I have actually been challenged here and because of it, I am better for it. It’s awesome that you were able to overcome adversity and be where you are today. Hard work and dedication can pay off and it’s great when it does.

  7. I actually have already finished my portfolio so I will explain what I did and why I did it. The design I used for my portfolio was a Weebly website. I have never created a website in my life before this and it was very simple but professional. I am able to insert my texts, documents, YouTube videos, pictures, headers and borders! The theme to my whole portfolio is technology, which ironically fits my life story for this portfolio perfectly since this is the first year we are 100% paperless in our portfolios. My header is of two pictures that I believe portray technology throughout the world. On my home page I included a comical video about the rapid changes every day in technology along with this reflection and my midterm reflection. On my second page I included the “Peter and the Chicken” exercise because that symbolized to me the learning of how to write a crot. Then I thought of my first Composition as an old school idea so I paired an image of a piece of paper with my first draft, a typed article with my second draft, and a cursively wrote final draft with my third draft showing that technology had not taken off yet. My second composition’s topic was music videos so I embedded the making of a music video in my second composition. I added an image of the album cover of Katy Perry’s Teenage Dream album with the first draft, an image of the Candy Land set being filmed with my second draft, and the real final California Gurls video with my final draft. In composition three the technology made it to a whole new level. My final draft includes a live broadcast of a facebook page, a newspaper article, and me. Therefore, I included next generation’s future version of Honda’s flying car in the making for my drafts.

I like how your ideas are chronological from when you were younger changing to as you grow up. My ideas were also chronological but through technology and many many more years. I do not believe when you say you are not creative because you are a hard worker and I can tell from your story. I am interested in seeing your portfolio now and how it turned out. It is pretty awesome that you were able to escape the stereotype of being an autistic kid and even greater that you can share that. I shared your feeling in I felt I had to work very hard on this portfolio because this is a new way of showing my work and now finally at the end, I think it was a great idea. In this semester I have now learned how to make a website, make a youtube video from my computer, and how to edit videos also. If you asked me how to do any of those things four months ago I would have given you the most pitied look! Thank you Ms. Mitchell for challenging us to new heights!

I plan on using two main things when i design my portfolio. the fact that i like to be laid back and not too demanding i want my portfolio to be easily navigable and i want it to include my favorite color, blue. By narrowing down the choices to something that i believe is me in a nutshell i have already skimmed though the templates of weebly and saw a very good design template. The template i saw and plan on using is a blue sky with clouds and a grassy ground. I want to use this because it reminds me of when i use to go out and just lay in my front yard for no reason and makes me feel relaxed especially when it is such a hectic time like during finals. Also by being easily navigable i will add in easy to follow instructions on how to get around the website because you can not always assume that everyone is use to computers or how to navigate them very well. Even if the instructions are very easy to follow and do not need to be told i will do it anyways just because i want to make sure there are no questions about it.

My goal when designing my portfolio was to make it neat and easy to read, but also entertaining. Too often I come across websites with jumbled messes of text that just make me want to click the "back" button and leave. I wanted to avoid that and captivate the reader by making it comfortable so they could get the most out of the actual content. I used cool colors instead of warm ones so as to not be straining on the eye after a lot of reading. Each composition has its own page, and each draft has its own section on its respective composition's page. Each page contains an introduction, the drafts, a summary of each draft, peer and instructor comments, and a conclusion. Each page is standardized to make it easy to browse and find different things, One of the main stylistic points of my portfolio is the main image, which is of a car driving off into the mountains. I used this as a sort of "theme", and named each of my sections with a car/trip related title. I kept my audience in mind while designing the visual rhetoric of my portfolio. My audience is my peers and instructor. I tried to lay everything out neatly and in an organized fashion so it could be quickly and accurately graded by the audience, without vital assignments being missed because they're too hard to find.

I like how you noticed the theme's relation to your grandmother. Once someone knows something so personal like this, it adds a whole new feel to your portfolio. I wish I could have thought of something similar to make my portfolio more “my own”. I kept my layout simple too, like you. I think you're right about keeping the navigation and reading of the portfolios easy, so as to keep the audience's attention. It seems like you really know a lot about visual rhetoric and were able to apply is successfully.

My portfolio will be centered on my overall theme of growth as a writer. Using a background with a flower, I will include a welcome page, as well as table of contents. I want the viewer to be greeted by a short message when he/she visits the site of my portfolio. The table of contents will provide an organized insight as to what will be included in the portfolio to know what to expect. Next I will include my three compositions, in chronological order, to go along with my growth in writing from the beginning to the end of the semester. Additionally, I will include blogs, peer comments, and my midterm and final reflections. The tabs to each of these pages will be towards the top of my sight’s page for easy navigation. Depending on what colors are used in the background, I will change the font colors to mirror it. This will add a nice, corresponding effect. I will include a couple of my favorite quotes about writing to give the viewer my take on it. For each of the three main compositions, I will put my final draft directly onto the sight. It is polished and displays my best work, so I want the viewer to see this version first. The other drafts will be attacked as files to prevent each page from becoming overwhelmed with too much writing.

I also get frustrated with websites that are difficult and confusing to navigate. I also feel it is important to design our WebPages so that the viewer can get the most out of the content without getting overwhelmed. I tried to avoid doing this when constructing my website as well. It was really clever for you to use cool tones. From this, I can tell you really thought through your page’s design. Focusing the theme of your portfolio on a car driving off into the mountains is very unique. I think your portfolio is going to turn out great!

  14. I planned to create my design for the portfolio to reflect myself, normal font but with a few bright colors. At first I had no idea what to use as the layout but as soon as I saw the flock of birds flying through the sun-lit sky I knew it represented myself. I love finding quotes that describe how I feel, so I found a couple of quotes that described the portfolio and what it was on, growth. Another quote I found was about being yourself. I wanted to find a quote about individuality because a friend of mine showed me that the most important thing in life is being yourself and this specific quote brings attention to the fact that everyone’s writings shows who they are through each word they use. I believe that it’s easier finding out who your true friends are by being yourself, if they truly care about you they would love you for who you are, not who you are pretending to be. I specifically chose to name each page after ways I’ve grown, because each of those traits are important to me, they make me who I am today. I try my best to be myself, I try to live life by having the most fun, and I love helping others, that’s just what I’m best at.

I totally agree it's so annoying going to websites where you can barely read whats on the screen and what the point of the website is. Your idea for making your website really simple is a great idea! It's so much easier understanding the theme of the website when its just a simple layout.
